The pictures might take a minute or two to load depending on your connection, but they are worth it if you're interested at all in vintage snowmobiles.

Hello fellow snowmobilers,

The trails are in excellent shape here in Bangor.  Work continues on trying to gain access to Glenburn from Broadway.  You can go from the PAL Building to Glenburn, but that’s the only way at this moment.  We are working on it.

The Vintage Snowmobile Ride was a success from everyone’s point of view.  It was our first and we had 14 vintage sleds make the journey and 23 sleds total.  Because Dysart’s had standing room only when we were scheduled to be there for lunch, riders opted to go to Hermon Pond for a photo op and then return to the Hermon Snowmobile Club for lunch.  A big thank you to Deanna and her kitchen crew for lunch and their hospitality.

Only two vintage sleds broke down along the trail and one newer sled overheated.  You would be amazed at how well those older sleds did.  They went right along with the rest of us.  I thought they would be a lot slower.

Take a look at some of the pictures taken that day and see the different years of the sleds.

Everyone seemed to have a great time and are looking forward to next year – same weekend – same place.

I never knew that there were sleds like these around and they actually still ran.  Owners of these sleds are very particular about their vintage sleds and take excellent care to keep them all in tip top shape, putting them back to mint condition.  A lot of owners have more than one or two as well.

The trails were groomed last night (2/2/09) from Union Street to Bass Park and Hampden.  Joshua and Frank were out.  Sunday afternoon Dennis, Frank, and Tom were out from Union Street to Kev-Lan.  Before that it was Brian, Marcia (the younger one), Tom, Dennis, Michael, Marcia (the older one), Frank, and possibly others that I missed have also been out taking care of the trails.

Remember to stop by the club house on Friday nights and see what is going on.  You never know when you might find a card game, a bonfire, something yummy to snack on, or someone wanting to go for a ride.  If the light is on, we are there.

OK, now for my giggle.  Three people headed out on a trail that no one had been on yet this year.  Yes, an access trail behind someone’s house.  Well, the snow is pretty deep if no one had been through there, right?  Sled #1 gets stuck and we apologize to them for getting them in this predicament.  Really, really stuck!  The next sled doesn’t get stuck but waits on the small hill.  Oh dear.  Spring will be here before you know it, right?  OK.  Now make a new trail through the woods with the other bigger sled past the smaller one to the real trail.  Yeah!  Well, the sled comes back through and gets stuck going around the sled that remained on the trail.  Sound familiar?  Well, after about forty-five minutes of getting stuck and unstuck and back on the real snowmobile trail, they were off.   After a nice ride it was time to come back through the trail again.  Oh dear – not me!  I’m not getting stuck now – it is dark and you know me and the dark, I’m going the other way.  One sled went one way and the other two through the trail.  We all three made it home safely.

Welcome new members.  We have had quite a few new members this year.  Kale & his wife, Hopkins Landscaping, Michael & his wife, Bill & his wife, Randall, an associate member Bruce, and welcome back to other members rejoining again this year.  It isn’t too late to renew your membership.

Post cards reminding everyone of our meeting this month will be going out tomorrow (2/4/09).

This weekend there are a lot of activities planned in the area.  I have put up a calendar at the club house of

activities planned in clubs close to Bangor in case anyone wants to know what is going on.  I have also put up additional pictures from the Vintage Snowmobile Ride.

Paul Bunyan Snowmobile Club meeting for February is scheduled for Friday, February 13 at 7:00 pm.  Our guest for this evening will be our local Game Warden Jim Fahey.  Drop by to meet him and see what he has to say about trail safety and if there are things we can do to help the warden service.

See you on the 13th.
